Consortium Member Biography
STEPHEN SYLVESTER, PERU STATE COLLEGE
Dr. Stephen Sylvester has been Dean of Arts and Sciences and Professor of History at Peru State College since 2001, following a year as Director of Matanuska Susitna College in Alaska and eleven years as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Montana State University-Northern, where he was Montana’s Carnegie Professor of the year in 1995. Stephen has been involved in Service-Learning and related activities for many years -- a member of Montana’s Campus Compact Organizing Committee, he served in Montana’s Learn and Serve Consortium for several years and was Director of the Montana Campus Compact Center at MSU-Northern for five years. He served four year terms on the Minnesota Humanities Council and the Montana Committee for the Humanities and was a consultant for the North Dakota Committee for the Humanities and Public Issues. His primary research interests are the American Frontier, women’s history, and the history of technology. He has lectured in Turkey and won a Fulbright fellowship to Morocco and Tunisia.
